Grenen in Skagen

When you want to visit Grenen, you can take a ride with the iconic Sandorm. The shuttle service Sandormen winds itself through the sand dunes and carries visitors to the tip of Denmark to experience the awe-inspiring view of the meeting of the two seas. You do not have to worry about the time of departures as Sandormen goes back and forth as long as guests are present - remember cash, since you cannot use payment cards. From Grenen you can start your trip through the entire area that is packed with beautiful scenery and views. You can go southwards through the sand dunes and be truly captivated by the nature, letting it cast a spell on you. You can choose to follow the beach towards Skagen Grå Fyr or you can choose the paths and walk towards the centre of Grenen where restaurants and museums are waiting for you.  

Spread across the entire area you will find bunkers that were a part of the Atlantic Wall. At Skagen Bunkermuseum, you can enter a sanitation bunker from World War II, a so-called Regelbrau 638. At the museum, you learn about the strategic importance of the bunker facilities in Skagen and you receive a review of the history that lead to World War II. In the north eastern corner of the parking lot, you can continue to a lookout point where you are able to see the bunkers on a straight line on the spit, which indicates the coastline during the construction of the bunker facilities. During the summer months, a guided tour of the bunkers is offered, which explains more about the bunkers and why they are there. 

If you need to get the dramatic past at a distance, you have the opportunity to explore Grenen Kunstmuseum and in calm surroundings gaze at the beautiful artwork. Built on the ruins of the old seaside hotel, Axel Lind has created a space for his work and Scandinavian sculptors and artists. Axel Lind’s work is breathtaking and illustrates the at times rough nature surrounding Skagen – go exploring and be seduced by the art. As a part of Grenen Art Museum, the Gallerie Rasmus has continuously intriguing special exhibitions and is therefore always worth a visit.

At Restaurant De 2 Have, you can enjoy your lunch surrounded by areas of natural beauty with the view over Grenen. Likewise, it is possible to enjoy dinner while taking in the wonderful sunset on the west-facing terrace. If your stomach is craving sweets, the Grenen Kiosk has the solution. Here, you can indulge in huge ice-cream cones and soft serve that is always appreciated in the summer heat. At the same time, you can create a memory for life in the kiosk’s large selection of souvenirs that entails everything from postcards to paintings.

Just south of Grenen lies Skagen Grå Fyr. Here, you can take a stroll from Grenen along the beach that is often guested by porpoises and seals, and every now and then whale species such as killer whales appear. Additionally, you can experience the fantastic bird life that exists at the spit of Skagen, where the concentration of birds of prey is huge in the spring. Here, Skagen Grå Fyr – Center For Trækfugle offers the best conditions in Northern Europe to experience the migration of the birds. If the hunger reports its presence, you can safely stop by Skagen Grå Fyr Café that amongst other things serves tapas with fresh local commodities and homemade cakes. If your legs are still fit, you can also stop by Skagen Odde Naturcenter. In this architectural pearl, designed by Jørn Utzon, you can learn about the origin of the spit and the nature surrounding the entire Skagen. If the trip is too long, you can hop on the city bus that runs between Skagen Grå Fyr and Skagen Odde Naturcenter.
