Skagen Harbour

The harbour, Skagen Harbour, has been the local point of many activities ever since it was opened in 1907. It is one of Denmark's most important fishing ports. A small fleet of local fishing boats supplies fresh fish to the fish auction every day. Thousands of pleasure boat sailors contribute to the creation of a wonderful and intense atmosphere at the harbour.

The harbour

Skagen Harbour is the town's heart. Here you can really feel Skagen's pulse and encounter the town's underlying ambition. Ever since the harbour was inaugurated in 1907, it has been the local point of activities. Skagen Harbour is one of Denmark's most important fishing ports and - with its advanced fishing industries and a shipyard industry that is a leader in Denmark - continues to be of crucial importance to Skagen's economy.

The harbour has been extended several times and the harbour area is currently being extended and the basins are being made deeper. The port can therefore still receive large vessels with fish and shellfish for processing.

Important navigation route for European shipping

More than 100,000 ships sail around Grenen every year, where Skagerrak and Kattegat have represented important navigation routes for European shipping.

Shipwrecks and accidents at sea are now thankfully rare, but this hasn't always been the case. Thousands of ships met a disastrous fate and were lost at Skagen.

Skagen By- og Egnsmuseum has a salvage exhibition which focuses on the salvaging service and the many wrecks that Skagen has experienced in the past.

To assist shipping, beacons and navigation marks have been established around Skagen.

"Skagen's beacons"

The oldest existing beacon - "Vippefyret" - was erected in 1627. "Det hvide Fyr" is from 1747 and "Det grå Fyr", which is still in service, is 46 metres high and was erected in 1858. The newest beacon, "Skagen Vest", is from 1956.
