The magic of nature

Skagen boasts magnificent and dramatic scenery characterised by sea, sand, wind and wonderful light. This special light is created thanks to reflections from the sea around Skagen and from the many, kilometre-long white sandy beaches. Skagen is also the place in Denmark where the sun shines the most.

Skagen and Råbjerg Mile

Skagen and the elements are inextricably linked: The sea, the light, the air and the sand.
"Råbjerg Mile", which is Northern Europe's largest migrating dune, bears witness to a time when sand migration destroyed everything in its path. Large sand dunes migrated from west to east. Today only Råbjerg Mile is allowed to migrate unhindered more than 15 metres a year.

The disastrous consequences of sand migration

One of the "victims" of sand migration was "Den Tilsandede Kirke". The church was at the time the biggest in Vendsyssel. The migration of the sand, which began in the 16th century, reached the church at the end of the 1700s. The congregation had to dig their way in when there was a service. This struggle lasted until 1795, when the church was abandoned by royal decree. Today only the white tower remains as a remnant of the disastrous consequences of sand migration.

A worthy representative

With its location between two seas and its beautifully varied terrain, "Skagen Klitplantage" is a worthy representative for the many state-owned dune plantations which since the middle of the 19th century have been established along Jutland's north and west coasts in order to provide protection against the wind and sand migration.

Grenen
Udsigt til Grenen

Grenen

The top of Denmark - "Grenen", where the seas of Kattegat and Skagerrak meet - is undergoing a constant process of change in an interaction between the forces of the sea and the wind. It gradually moves ENE at a rate of up to 10 metres a year.

Bathing is not allowed at the point on Grenen due to the treacherous currents, and near breakwaters there can be deep holes. Skagerrak can be turbulent with powerful waves and powerful currents. Kattegat is calmer and more suitable for children.

"Seals"

are a not unusual sight here at the top of Denmark. There's a large seal population in the waters around Skagen, and on the beaches you can meet both adult seals and pups at any time of the year. Enjoy the sight. They're shy, but it's quite natural for them to rest on the beach.

"Skagen rose"

What is a Skagen rose? When the topshoots on a Salix repens var. argentea are shortened to grey rosettes, it's due to the fact that the gall midge lays its eggs in the topshoot, which the larvae later eat.

The deformed topshoot has the appearance of a small delicate rose. It's a local custom to gild or silver the roses and use them as jewellery.
