The golden age artists
Skagen's own golden age of art is known all over the world and is rich in the town's history. Some of Denmark's most famous and admired artists have made their mark on Skagen and its development as a holiday destination. The artists were drawn by the wonderful light, the nature and the harsh living conditions for the inhabitants in the fishing village. At the end of the 19th century there was a genuine artists' colony made up of painters from all over Europe.
A large number of their works can be seen at Skagens Museum depicting what the town, the landscape and the local citizens - in particular the fishermen - looked like in the past.

If you wish to dig deeper into the town's history, a visit to Skagen By- og Egnsmuseum is a good idea. An interesting cultural historical open-air museum can be experienced here which describes fishing, the many shipwrecks and the rescue services, as well as the sometimes tough and unmerciful day-to-day life for the local citizens.
