Bangsbo Area

The Bangsbo area - in the southern part of Frederikshavn - has lots of exciting things to offer: the resistance musuem at Det Jydske Modstandsmuseum, the hills of Pikkerbakken, the Ellingåskib wreck, the botanical gardens at Bangsbo Botaniske Have, the nature playground and the deer park at Bangsbo Dyrehave are just some of them.

On the southern outskirts of Frederikshavn lies an oasis with the manor house of Herregården Bangsbo surrounded by the gardens of Botanisk Have, herb garden, deer park with free-roaming deer and a nature playground, the tower of Cloostårnet in the forest of Vandværksskoven and Restaurant Møllehuset by the stream at the foot of the hills of Pikkerbakkerne.

Greatest authors

The manor house of Herregården Bangsbo has a turbulent history. The first known owner was from 1364, and the estate later belonged to the monastery of Børglum Kloster, but after the reformation it was surrendered to Otto Banner, whose wife, Ingeborg Skeel, took over the manor house following his death.

During the period 1891-1909 the owner was Johan Knudsen Bangsbo, and he gathered some of the day's greatest authors and intellectuals around him, including Herman Bang and Gustav Wied. This literary golden age took place at around the same time as the painters met at Skagen.

Northern Europe's largest collection of hair art

The main building contains an urban and local historical collection, as well as a peasants' and a Victorian style living-room, an empire hall and great hall that are used for various exhibitions. Here you will also find northern Europe's largest collection of hair art, i.e. jewellery, etc., made from human hair.

In the northern wing you'll find Det Jyske Modstandmuseum, which is a museum commemorating the Danish resistance movement during the Second World War. The collection is built up on providing visitors with a unique experience, for instance standing under starry skies and feeling the atmosphere of a dropping operation.

The maritime section contains the unique Ellingåskib from 1163, a ship that was discovered at Elling, north of Frederikshavn. In addition, model ships, gallion figures and motors are displayed in an adjacent section.

Bangsbo also contains a collection of marine archaeology, including a number of finds from the English warship The Crescent, which sank near Mårup Church near Lønstrup on 4th December 1808. The north Jutland coasts have historically been very treacherous, and it is estimated that around 10,000 maritime accidents have occurred here.

The green areas

The gardens around Bangsbo take their inspiration from England. There is a garden of imported species, a rose garden and a rhododendron park.

The stream of Bangsbo Å meanders through the area. In the small teahouse in the garden you can enjoy coffee that you have brought with you from home.

Herb garden and nature playground

Behind the breeding buildings a herb garden has been laid out with a touch and scented garden and brail on the signs. From here there is a view of the popular nature playground in the deer park with a hut for packed lunches and a hut with a bonfire site.

At the beginning of June an annual Flower Festival is held in Bangsbo's botanical gardens.

Bangbo deer park extends over an area of some 100 acres, in which red deer, fallow deer and roe deer can roam freely.

View of the Land of Light

Cloostårnet is surrounded by the forest of Vandværksskoven. From the 60-metre high tower, which lies 100 metres above sea level, you can enjoy the view of Skagen to the north, Rubjerg Knude to the west and Jyske Ås to the south. To the east you can see Hirsholmene, the seven small islands in Kattegat that lie off the coast of Frederikshavn, and the island of Læsø.

You can enjoy a packed lunch or prepare your foood on the permanent barbecue, whilst the kids play at the playground adjacent to the forest of Vandværksskoven.

Good stories

At the deer park at Bangsbo Dyrehave in October you can see the stags rutting on a stag tour with a nature interpreter and a keeper as your guides.

Following the walk in the deer park, you can enjoy a unique experience in Skovhuset restaurant with good food and wine.

Flade Bakker

The landscape around Frederikshavn consists of striking hills, high-lying plains and low-lying coastal plain.

The hills are concentrated in the south of the town, with Pikkerbakken (71 metres), Øksnebjerg (95 metres) and Flade Bakker with the church of Flade Kirke lying 105 metres above sea level. The highest point is Kig-Ud at 122 metres.

The name Flade means a flat or slightly inclined plain, and Fladstrand, which was the original name of Frederikshavn, may mean the flat beach at the foot of the high-lying plains.

Christian Cloos

The tower, Cloostårnet, is named after its donator, Christian Cloos, who was the son of one of the major merchants in Frederikshavn.

In his will he left the area and a sum of money to the municipal authority on the condition that the tower was erected so that local citizens could enjoy the beautiful view.
